BRING THAT BEAT BACK! This is the one. New Flesh return to the fray and utterly smash it, ripping up preconceptions, your head and the dancefloor all at once. Still on the bleeding edge of hip hop, the boys have rediscovered the soul in their sound and come through with a tune that nods to two step, rumba and A Tribe Called Quest while sounding like none of them. A blast of fresh air to lead us into the summer.
Shortly after their first album came out, New Flesh were touring Germany when Gift of Gab from Blackalicious poked his head into their dressing room to congratulate them on the off-the-hook show he had just witnessed. It took nearly two years from that first meeting to finally organise a collaboration, but the result was worth waiting for.
With producer Part 2 putting together a beat he has described as "Timbaland on acid" (although it could just as easily be called dancehall-soul), Gab roars through one of the best verses you'll hear this year, effortlessly displaying the rhythmic complexity of the music he's riding. The package is completed by Toastie Tailor, who looks back to a childhood in Grenada to come through with some soca-styled MCing and an impassioned chorus that sounds (a little) like young Michael Jackson inna dub stylee!
The single is completed by an excellent remix from Part 2 and the inspirational "Bound' featuring Juice Aleem on microphone duties, which has already had New Flesh named the Sly & The Family Stone of Big Dada.
With the album "Understanding" to follow, featuring guest appearances from, amongst others, old skool futurist legend Ramm:Ell:Zee and Beans (Anti-Pop Consortium), New Flesh continue to innovate and expand their range. Catch it now, before everyone claims to have discovered them…

"Like a less garish Outkast, a more incisive Missy, pretty much the best of the States torn from its moorings and allowed to float around our own backyard, replete with a chorus to die for."

"Like Timbaland's Jamaican cousin now living in South London on MDMA. Hip-Step-soul, perhaps"

"Remarkable... smart, surreal r&b"
