At last the time has come. After years of false starts and frustrations, the world is about to hear Ty, the man who was recently described in Hip Hop Connection as "a lyrical overseer of the UK hip hop scene... the best MC in these isles - with obvious international and universal appeal" – even though he hasn’t had a record out in over two years…

January 2001 will see the relase of Ty’s debut album, ‘Awkward,’ and to start whetting your appetite, Big Dada present ‘Break The Lock’ a jazzy ode to self-empowerment, self-realisation and, well, just getting on with it and doing your thing whatever and whoever tells you you can’t. Produced by the veteran DJ Biznizz (whose credits are a role call of hip hop in the UK and beyond) and with live trumpet and keyboards, ‘Break The Lock’ is destined to become some kind of an anthem, a miniature soul classic, where the ‘soul’ denotes exactly where its coming from.

On the flip, Ty reveals another side of the equation with ‘The Tale,’ a funny little story rhyme about what happens with the groupie ting even before your record’s out. Please note Ty’s disclaimer: "It’s just fiction – take it how you wanna." Or don’t. We’re not buggin’. Either way, revel in the skanking bass and Ty’s way with a tale, however tall.

Ty’s debut on vinyl came back in 1995 alongside I.G.Culture. He has worked with the likes of MC Mell’O’, Jonzi D and Pogo and has recently featured on albums and singles by the Nextmen, Unsung Heroes, Procryptix and Krispy. He also hosts Lyrical Lounge with DJ Pogo. In 1997 he released singles
with well-known DJ Shortee Blitz. As a duo they are now signed to Bear Mountain, a US imprint owned and ran by Maceo from De La Soul. He dances funny (but super-funky). He’s complicated. "I’m not a poet. I’m just an MC. But I get away with it".

MINISTRY

"The most charismatic of all British rappers... Ty is smooth, taking his time to get his cheeky, easy-going lyrics out. A national treasure"

WAX, SINGLE OF THE MONTH

"This single is quality hip hop, both musically and lyrically, and is a must for all you hip hop record lovers"

HHC, SINGLE OF THE MONTH

"The nicest 12" you'll hear this winter, smooth and mellow in the way that De La and Tribe were in the early days. No two ways about it, this month's essential purchase"

SLEAZE NATION

"The funkiest outbreak of British hip hop since Caveman… the first single from the debut album we’ve been needing like a cold lager in a desert. Ty deserves double platinum"

DJ

"You’re gonna have to wait until next year for the debut album, ‘Awkward,’ but ‘Break The Lock’ should have you frothing at the gusset in anticipation. This adds essential swish to your every Walkmanned step, and that wait until January is gonna be hell. Curse you Big Dada, why do you tease us so?"
