Although the Sharks in the title of Rollie ‘Cadence Weapon’ Pemberton’s single refer to those oft decried biters – thieves of original thought in hip-hop – the first few bars of the song itself scud from the speakers as ominously and hair raisingly as a sharp dorsal fin from the water. From then on in, he’s got you paying attention.
Over a thudding heart of kick drums and bass, electronic melody winds its way whilst Rollie’s voice drips with controlled hunger, flowing with the kind of delivery that announces him as a seriously able MC from the get go. The razor sharp chorus literally lets the music do the talking, and by the time the verbal window to a very compelling mind opens up again, you find yourself just on the right side of impatience.
On the B-Side, new Big Dada signing X-Rabit wrings the track through an explosive, cartoon light and sound show, tremulous synths climbing over lashing snares and rolling, ominous waves of bass.
Cadence has recently performed with the Klaxons at the Pitchfork festival in New York, has had over 35,000 views of the Sharks video on Youtube and is heading over to the UK this Autumn for the Big Dada 10 year anniversary and a few key live shows.
All in all, ‘Sharks’ provides an effortless blueprint of where independent hip-hop could and should be in 2007: an even more dangerous place for water-treading artists than the Cornish coast!
