With these immortal lines Naeem Juwan aka Spank Rock leads out the first, promo-only, white label single from what we already think will be one of the best albums of next year, “YoYoYoYoYoYo”.
And there's a clue in the title and that first line as to the main themes of Mr Juwan's poetic output and hence of its lineage. Coming from Baltimore club music (the home town of both the MC and XXXchange, the producer), Miami bass and any other hyped-up, gutter-mouthed Black American hybrid you can think of, the beauty of Spank Rock is that they can make it seem so fresh and so funny. “Backyard Betty” is a proper blue collar love story, just with more emphasis on the blue than the collar.
Money Studies release "Put That Pussy On Me" and the "Voila!" mixtape were just a warm-up. Alex Epton aka Armani XXXchange hooks up sparse, supple rhythms with super-catchy electronic lines and the odd inspired lump of sample, Naeem splurges his booty-obsessed lyrics, swearing is deployed liberally and is both big and funny. Imagine if Richard Pryor was twenty and decided to be a rapper. Cutting edge without really caring, phenomenally rude without even meaning to be, this is Spank Rock.
